The Vacation – A Story

“I’ve had it!  I’m taking a vacation”, John said, talking to his wife.

“Sounds like a good idea.  Where will we go?”

“Go?  No, I don’t mean that kind of vacation.  I mean a vacation away from praying.  I’m simply too tired to continue, and I don’t really see the results anyway.”

And so it was, that John took his vacation until he received a visit from an angel that very night.

“So, are you willing that 55 people should die today?”, the angel asked John in a dream.

“What do I have to do with 55 people, and whether they live or die?”

“Because that’s how many will die today if you do not pray”, the angel said without emotion.

“That’s impossible.  How could that be?”, John asked, incredulously.

“It’s too complicated to explain to you, but God wanted you to know that if you take your vacation 55 people will die, and He wanted to know if you are willing for that to happen?”

Then John awoke, startled.  What kind of dream was that, he wondered?  It just doesn’t make sense.  I never see the results of my prayers, so how could it affect the lives of 55 people, he pondered?  But, it seemed so real.

“I’ve changed my mind.  It’s not quite time to take that vacation”, John told his wife.

John continued, “Too many people depend on it, and you never know what might happen should I fail to do my job.”

John’s wife looked at him funny, but said nothing.
